Ons storie begin met net twee ou weeframe.
In 1998 het die meesterwewer Stuart Holding twee gerestoureerde antieke weeframe bekom. Hy het hierdie weeframe gebruik om beperkte reekse pragtige tekstielware vir die huis te vervaardig. Hy het in ’n ou skuur gewerk waar mense wat verbyloop hom kon sien werk, en dit sy “werkende weefmuseum” genoem. Hy het die klein tekstielskeppings wat hy hier vervaardig het in sy vrou, Janet se winkel verkoop. Sommer gou was die aanvraag groter as dít wat hy kon vervaardig en Mungo het besluit dit is tyd om uit te brei en produksie te verskuif na ’n meule in ’n ou melkplaasgebou ’n paar kilometer daarvandaan. Jare later het dinge verander: ons het die koeie agtergelaat, in ons eie meule ingetrek en vier winkels in Suid-Afrika oopgemaak. Ons eenmanspan het gegroei tot ’n familie van 80, en tesame met ons Suid-Afrikaanse/wêreldwye webtuiste het ons ook nou webtuistes wat in die VSA en Europa gebaseer is. Alhoewel ons besig is om uit te brei, bly ons fundamentele waardes dieselfde – om pragtig ontwerpte tekstiele vir die huis te vervaardig, wat met omgee geweef word vir ons gemeenskap en die omgewing.
In 2017 het die Mungo-span se jarelange droom waar geword: om ons eie meule te bou op die grond van Old Nick Village, naby Stuart se oorspronklike skuur en langs ons hoofwinkel. Ons filosofie van deursigtigheid is duidelik sigbaar in die produksieproses by die Mungo Mill, aangesien die hele meule oop is vir die publiek. As deel van ons volhoubaarheiddoelwitte het ons in 2020 ’n oudit vir GOTS-sertifikasie (Global Organic Textile Standard) ondergaan. Ons is nou Suid-Afrika se eerste GOTS-gesertifiseerde tekstielweefmeule.
Ons glo sterk dat dít wat ons skep en hóé ons dit skep sal deursypel na die eindverbruiker en sal help om die wêreld waarin ons leef te verbeter. Ons gebruik weefkuns op ’n kontemporêre manier om gehalteprodukte te skep wat mense kan koester. Etiese handel en integriteit is deel van ons basiese filosofie en ons is veral puntenerig daaroor om gehalte- natuurlike vesels te gebruik. Ons materiale is gemaak om duursaam te wees – ons glo daaraan om tekstiele te maak wat lank gaan hou en nie op ’n ashoop eindig nie.
As deel van ons strewe na volhoubaarheid, deursigtigheid en naspeurbaarheid, hoop ons dat mense dinge meer sal waardeer as hulle weet waar dit vandaan kom en hoe dit gemaak word, wat gevolglik meer bewustheid sal aanmoedig wanneer mense die besluit moet neem om iets te koop.
Our story begins with just two old looms.
In 1998, master weaver Stuart Holding came into possession of two restored antique looms. He used these looms to weave limited runs of beautiful homeware textiles from what he called his “working weaving museum” – an old barn where passers-by could watch him work. He sold the resulting small textiles in his wife, Janet’s, shop. Soon demand outstripped supply and Mungo expanded production to a mill housed in an old dairy building a few kilometres away. Years later, things have changed; we have left the cows behind, moved to our very own mill and opened four stores in South Africa. Our one-man team has grown to a family of over 80, and alongside our South African/global site, we now have websites based in the USA and the EU. Although we are growing, our foundational values remain the same – to produce beautifully designed homeware textiles, woven with care for our community and the environment.
In 2017 the Mungo team fulfilled a long-cherished dream: building our own mill on the grounds of Old Nick Village, near Stuart’s original barn, and next door to our flagship store. The Mungo Mill is a testament to our philosophy of transparency in the production process, with the entire mill open to the public. You can read more about the mill and how we make our fabric here. Pursuant to our sustainability objectives, we underwent an audit for Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certification in 2020. We are now South Africa’s first GOTS certified textile weaving mill.
We believe strongly that what we create, and the manner in which we create it, will filter down to the end user and help to improve the world we live in. We’re using the art of weaving in a contemporary manner to create quality products for people to treasure. Ethical trading and integrity underpins our philosophy, and we are particular about sourcing quality natural fibres. Our fabrics are constructed to stand the test of time – we believe in creating textiles that are made to last and not destined for landfill.
As a part of our sustainability, transparency and traceability objective, we hope that when people understand where something comes from and how it is made, they will value it more, and in turn this can help encourage conscious purchasing decisions.
