Out Of Zululand

We are an Adelaide-based store selling South African crafts and homewares.

In 2005, our small family of 3 made the jump across the ocean in search of a better life. On trips back to our ‘other home’ we would always bring back trinkets to share with our Australian friends, always finding a sense of beauty and comfort in items that reminded us of home. After 10 years of collecting fabrics and beadwork from South Africa, stocking some of our fabric products and homewares in stores, and selling our beadwork to friends and their friends, we took the jump and went to our first ever pop up market in at the Gaslight Tavern in Brompton in late 2015 and never looked back.

Now located in the warm, community-centred precint that is Plant 4 Bowden, we have loved bringing a little bit of African vibrancy to Adelaide while forming meaningful partnerships with Zulu crafters in South Africa. Our crafters create unique, handmade products which marry contemporary design with traditional Zulu art and crafts, the likes of which have never before been seen in Adelaide.

All of our traditional Zulu beaded, wire and telephone wire products are handmade by a Zulu crafter in a community based in the Valley of 1000 Hills in Zululand (KwaZulu Natal). We have worked hard to develop an ethical relationship with crafters that encourages then to develop a sustainable income for themselves and their families.
